Stepford Park

Raise your hand if you've seen the movie Stepford Wives, either version.  I personally was quite entertained by the film (Nicole Kidman and Bette Midler version) even though it is not my usual genre.  From the very first day that we looked at this house when we were house shopping I told Shawn 'the whole neighborhood has a very Stepford feel to it' but I meant that in a good way, albeit yes, a wee, tiny bit creepy.  It's just a very 1960's type neighborhood and sometimes it almost feels like it has been isolated from the rest of the world so it is clean and the people are still friendly.

So my first night walking at the park I had several chats with various people as I was making my laps.  The second night, same thing.  Last night as I headed out, with Vladders, I told myself that I was going to try to keep the chatting to a minimum because I wanted to get done with my walk and get home in time to see Snackers before he had to leave for his night jobs.

My first encounter was with two little boys (around 9 or 10 perhaps) on Razors who practically chased me down to ask "What kind of dog is that?".  I stopped to let Vladdy play with them, oh because that was the order in which it went I assure you, they were HIS new toys and they loved it, and they proceeded to tell me every detail about their dogs - one had a husky and the other didn't know what kind of dog he had but he was pretty sure she'd been abused before his family adopted her.

I finally told them I had a lot of walking left to do and needed to get moving again and bid them adieu.  Encounter number two was with a family practicing their hitting and catching skills on the baseball field as I rounded right field.  Again, the woman and her daughter wanted to know what kind of dog Vladdy was and then they wanted to play with him.  By the time I got around to home plate another woman and little girl combo asked if they could pet the doggy.

As I passed the basketball courts a young man (teens) offered his own version with "that is a badass dog you've got there".  And two or three others including a woman walking her dog that I stopped to ask if there were any doggy watering stations at the park (which there aren't, in fact there is only one drinking fountain by the baseball diamond and it doesn't work - lame!).  It took nearly two hours to walk three little miles!!!  Not that I am apposed to getting to know my new local community and I am always happy to show off my pooch but good gravy right?!

  1. You always do such good calorie counts and your food seems simple but good. I think I do this salad overload, always thinking I have to buy all veggies for giant salads. I don't even really like salads. I follow a blog, and I don't remember which one where this woman stated she lost 80 pounds and ate maybe one salad a week. Smaller portions of the food we already enjoy seems to be okay, with some recipe modifications of course. Anyhow, this is a random rant.... sorry! 2 hours for 3 miles is funny, but knowing your neighbors will come in handy one day!

  2. Dogs and babies. This is why I walk alone. If I need further removal from reality--I wear headphones.

  3. April: when I first started this journey I had the idea that portion control was all that was needed. I thought I could eat whatever I wanted as long as I was strict doubt the calories. I slowly started to learn that the types of foods do make a difference but I still refuse to "diet" because even if I do so, I know that depriving myself now will only lead to a gain once I let my guard down. There are a ton of great cook books out there that teach you how to eat better without depriving yourself. Once you learn the basics from those books you can start to develop your own style and take more liberties for yourself with confidence. Don't deprive yourself, if you don't like salad there are tons of alternatives out there for you. Being miserable every time you eat will not help you once you keep the weight off once you've lost it. I mean, you could even have the occasional whopper every once in awhile (the cheeseburger) as long as you are aware that it is 1,000 calories and you eat small portions of it throughout the day but I personally have discovered that making my own cheeseburgers cures my whopper cravings, is about 1/4 the calories and I really truly can 'have it my way'.

Ki: I am going to make him a 'service dog in training' vest. Most people are pretty good about leaving service dogs alone thanks to the educational efforts of the ASPCA in the 80's and 90's. I got him a backpack too so he can carry his own damn water. . . And my cell phone. :). Me smart cookie!

  4. P.s. Sorry for typos. My iPad likes to correct me and it's not always right.
