Sympatico

Yesterday Snack Monkey and I sat down and made a grocery list together, when we'd finished the list we both thought the cost would easily be over $100-$150 dollars but it had a lot of base items like vinegar, flour, yeast, etc. on it and it was all for the purpose of making recipes from Cook This, Not That! Easy & Awesome 350-Calorie Meals so we figured it was worth spending a little extra if we made sure we wouldn't be eating out a lot this week.  I hit the gym and he hit the grocery store to do the shopping while I got my work-out on.

I actually got done before he did so I grabbed a few tokens for the message chairs and hung out to watch X-games and get a back massage while I waited for him to pick me up.  When he finally called to let me know he was pulling in the parking lot I was greeted by open pizza boxes on the tables in the lobby of the gym!  I went up to the counter and said with a grin "Ok, who thought it would be funny to have a pizza party at the gym?"  The boys behind the counter teased back "hey we don't want to hear it!"  I grabbed a slice on my way out the door but took it straight to Snack Monkey's open window and gave it to him.  His reward for doing all the grocery shopping without me.

When we got home I decided to put the groceries away since he did the shopping and, to my complete surprise, I didn't find a single, solitary box of cookies or junk food!  There were a couple 2 litres of soda but that was it!  Help me figure this out ... Snack Monkey gets minimum three or four different kinds of junk food when he and I go to the store together, or he insists that I put junk food on the list when I try to go without him, but he sticks to the list like velcro when he goes shopping without me?  Who saw that coming?  Certainly not me!  Not only that but, according to the receipt, he only spent $85.  He got everything on the list ... the veggie crisper in my fridge is practically overflowing!  I have the stuff to make a green chicken salad, chicken taco's, home made veggie calzone and home made pizza with home made dough and home made sauce, chicken adobo, Hawiian crepes, pico de gallo, and apple crumble for dessert.  All for $85!!

Tonight is finally the start of softball season and I am SO STOKED about that!  I'm going to be walking around the field tonight for as long as I can stand it, hopefully for the entire two hours of the game.  I'm also planning on shagging all the foul and homer balls that go over the fence; last year there were at least five or six per game.  I am debating taking Piper; on the one hand I know she'll have a good time and she loves going to the park but, one the other hand I'm worried she'll get tired early and I won't be able to walk for as long as I would like.  She's also a kid magnet and I dislike kids passionately.  My own nephews are good, I love them, but other people's kids tripping over my feet to pet my dog is just irritating to me.  And it's not like I can lie and say "she's not friendly, don't pet her or she'll bite you" because she loves kids as much as kids love her so she'll get all waggy tailed and start squeaking at them for attention and totally blow my cover.

  1. People always say that it cost so much more to eat healthy!
WEll when you figure in that you WONT be eating out..PLUS not buying pre-packaged processed junk..Well that is the way it should be and the way that we do it..We actually save money.
Every week I buy a big thing of chicken breast. It is almost $9 at walmart and I seperate it into freezer bags. 2 breast per bag. That last us for about 1-2 weeks. Depends what else is on the menu. We also eat a lot of flatouts. I make pizzas with them. I also make chciken fajitas with them. I also make a lot of stir frys with brown rice or quinoa. All this stuff is bought in bulk. So for the most part I am buying veggies, fruit, milk, soy, eggs and bread in between and that is about it..So yeah ..Much cheaper to eat healthy!

  2. Don't hate the kids . . .they can't help it. Hate the parents who don't teach their kids to be considerate and respectful.

Meanwhile, while you're hating, have fun correcting their children. Tell them they should always ask first before they touch a dog. While your dog is nice and friendly, the next dog might be the one to eat their face. Really? It's quite fun to tell children that. And the bonus? Their parents will make sure they stay away from you in the future.

  3. Renea: Yeah Snack Monkey bought a big thing of chicken breasts and divided it into freezer bags just like you do. I suppose he's a better shopper than I am because I usually buy the big bag of frozen chicken breasts for $10 but they don't seem to last as long and the pieces are definitely not as big. The vast majority of the grocery list consisted of veggies which I thought would make it a really expensive list. We bought something like 10 tomatoes, 2 onions, 2 cucumbers, broccoli, 2 jalapenos, 4 limes, 2 apples, a big thing of mushrooms, and some cilantro. I thought for sure that alone would be $30-$50.

Lanie: LOL you're awesome! See, if I had a big scary doberman I could tell kids that he would eat their faces. Then again part of wanting a big doberman is so I can train him to be a totally well behaved sugar pie and show ignorant breed-prejudiced morons that there is no such thing as a "bad breed". I even heard people bagging on Dalmatians the other day in a book store ... Dalmatians?! We had two dalmatians when I was a kid, the first was a female and she treated me like her own pup. My mom says I used to climb on her and ride her like a horse, and pull on her ears, and I even used her to learn how to toddle and she was always so patient and sweet. The second one we got when I was 5 and we had him for over 12 years. He was the best dog I've ever known hands down. Patch was his name and he had the most unique, beautiful, loving, intelligent personality I've ever seen in a dog. He used different kinds of woofs and roo-roo-roo's to communicate certain things like "I want that french fry" or "I want to go in the truck" or "I'm sorry you're sad, pet me and it will make you feel better".

On the up-side Piper and I were so busy doing laps that we didn't stop to let any kids trample us. She was DOG tired when we got home though (pun intended). So tired she couldn't even jump on the bed and had to be lifted. I wore my poor little pooper out.

  5. So far we've made a Greek Chicken Salad that I love but would like to improve on a little the next time I make it, and this morning Snack Monkey used the crepe recipe from the book to make breakfast crepes and I used the recipe analyzer on caloriecount.com to determine how many calories were in each serving.

  7. I think he's finally getting it. He still doesn't really care if what he eats is healthy but he is finally started to get into the groove when it comes to my food/exercise. He's starting to look at labels, measure things more when he cooks, and suggest healthier options that we can both live with. Last night's pudding was his idea, he bought a box of low-fat pudding intentionally, made it with my skim milk instead of his 2%, measured the servings perfectly into little sundae cups I have and after we got home from the park said "How many calories have you had today?" I told him, totally unaware that he had made pudding, and he said "So you can have 100 more right?" WOW! Two months ago he would have just handed me a cup of pudding and said "I don't know how many calories are in it, just eat it." I actually don't even like pudding very much but it was within my caloric limits and he went to so much trouble so I ate it (and shared some with the dog when Snack Monkey wasn't looking).

I always used to wish I had a professional chef who would cook me healthy food so that I didn't have to worry about it. I think Snack Monkey has potential! ;)
