Three miles!!! UN, DUE, TRE!

First off, for those of you wondering, that's Italian for 1, 2, 3; not Spanish.  Secondly, YES I WALKED THREE MILES ON A TREADMILL LAST NIGHT!!!!  Plus I had to walk up to the office where the workout room is located so I was huffing and puffing by the time I got there, then had to walk to the mailbox in the center of the complex, and home again after the workout.  About 20 minutes after I got home last night, the pain hit.  It's been awhile since I've really worked-out to the point of pain and I have to say; pain is really the reward for working out is it not?  I've missed it!  Who wants to bust their butt and break a sweat only to feel like they didn't do anything at all an hour later, or even the next day?

So last night when I stood up after resting on the sofa I realized that the muscles on the insides of my thighs were so sore and swollen that it felt like I had a tennis ball between my legs.  I had a blast but I need to find my charger for my iPod and get it ready because the gym has one TV with no sound and it was showing college football.  Bleh!  Today I had to crawl from my bed to my office and I can barely lift my arms enough to brush my hair.  I got some crunches in during lunch but "Temptation" wants to go to a movie tonight so I think I'm going to take it easy and let myself heal a little.

"Temptation" called me away from my computer for a minute just now to show me a segment on a morning show featuring a guy named David ZincZenko, author of the book "Eat This Not That".  He was showing various foods from chain restaurants and listing their calorie, fat, and sodium levels; then suggesting alternative dishes from the same restaurants.  One item he featured on the segment was an 8" deep dish pizza from Uno's (a Chicago restaurant); that had 2,500 calories.  Now I know why I gained so much flipping weight when I lived in Chicago!  I used to eat at Uno's ALL THE TIME!  In one little sitting I was eating more than the average daily caloric intake for a healthy person!!!  HOLY COW!!!

I'm going to get his book and I will more than likely be sharing some info with all of you.  If it's really, really good I will let you all know in case you want to grab a copy for yourselves.

Today I had to crawl from my bed to my office for work this morning because my legs were seized when I woke up.  I had trouble raising my arms to brush my hair because my arms still hurt so much.  My glutes are so tight and sore from last night's treadmill love-affair that sitting through the latest Harry Potter movie was like sitting on a bed of nails.  I forced myself to do some crunches during my lunch break because my stomach is about the only thing that doesn't hurt right now.  Even my hands hurt from all the crocheting I've been doing every night on the blanket I am making for "Temptation" but that's arthritis pain, deep down in the bones.  I developed a major blister on the back of my left heel so I had to wear flip-flops to the movie in spite of the cold.  But my calorie intake the past two or three days has been low so I am going to do my very best to not feel guilty about not getting much done, physically, today.  And I am going to promise that tomorrow, blister or no blister, my ass will be back on that treadmill.  I may or may not be doing 3 mph ... but I WILL be doing SOMETHING!

  1. I love the Eat This, Not That books. I have Cook This, Not That. I highly recommend it.

Wow, you sound a little too sore for comfort. Try not to do too much too soon, or crawling from your bed to your office for a few weeks will get old fast - and no fun either. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day and neither were we :-)

  2. when you had posted that you had walked 3 miles yesturday i was thinking to myslef...wow you are going to be sore!!
Then here you post that very thing.
What it is, is very small tears in the muscle fibers. That is what causes the pain. That along with water retention and swelling. So if you weigh tomorrow don't be surprised if you have a gain!
By the way I read the link you gave me and it makes complete sence. My doc even said some of the same stuff about plateaus. If you read my goals section I mention switching from a high to low calorie count for a few days so that my body does not get use to one or the other. The same concept. I was stuck on the same few pounds for 5 weeks when I finally broke through hat and hit 186.5 and this after eating OVER my calories go figure!
So I am going to be really strict for a few days and then not so strict for a few days and see how I do.

  3. I find that if I exercise enough for "real pain" (instead of muscles feeling used) I am less likely to exercise the next day. Therefore I try to keep it at a moderate level. Working out every day, to me, is more important than doing the painful stuff. (I'm still aiming for progress, but it's slower than it might be with more serious sessions.)

Have you considered using fish oil for your joint pain? I have bad knees, and since I started using fish oil capsules a bit more than a week ago, the pain has all but disappeared.

  4. I agree with all of you, especially the comment about Rome from Darla. I was on such a high from walking that I didn't want to stop and yes, I paid for it in spades. Going for a very slow walk last night loosened things up though, my muscles are a little sore and tired but not excruciating. I would like to go walking again tonight and do three miles again; if for no other reason than to see if I'm hurting as bad tomorrow as I was yesterday.

I have never heard of fish oil for joint pain. Bananas were recommended for muscle pain, something about potassium versus lactic acid and I can definitely say they work. Without my "banana a day" I would still be hurting today but I'm really not ... at least not that bad.

I will have to look into the fish oil because the arthritis pain in my hands can be down right frustrating sometimes.

  5. I am vegan, so I don't use fish oils, but I eat a quarter cup of walnuts every day as they have a very high level of omega 3s. After I did my first set of squats, I did a few songs on Just Dance 2 and everything loosened up nicely.

  7. Omega 3 fatty acids are awesome - whether you get them from fish, walnuts, or other sources. The amazing improvement in your joints is incredible. They do a lot for brain and heart function as well. Learning to like fish has been a great boon in my progress!

  8. Mandy: Have you heard of veganayse? "Temptation's" brother put it on my sandwich when we were staying with him over Christmas, it's made entirely from plan product so I would assume it's healthier but I didn't get a chance to look at the jar. Is it noticeably better than regular mayo or does it still have a crap load of oil?

Spunky: The first day I did squats as part of my work-out ... I don't even think I can put into words the aftermath lol. It wasn't as bad as I felt last night but it wasn't pretty either.

Lanie: I love fish ... if it's raw. :) I can't wait for the official end of the holidays so that I will know for sure what the money situation looks like so I can go back to that korean market. They had these BEAUTIFUL raw tuna steaks that made me drool!
