The Rock N' Roll Marathon

So I decided last night that I want to start planning for a marathon.  Lo and behold the next one to hit my neck of the woods is the Rock N' Roll marathon this coming Sunday.  The half-marathon is approx 13 miles in 4 hours so I did the math and that's around 18 minutes a mile ... once upon a time I could have said no problemmo and jumped right in but now, I'm not so sure.  So I mapquested an intersection that was exactly one mile from the front gates of my apartment complex, laced up my shoes and booked my happy hiney out the door.  It took 20 minutes and 34 seconds ... so close!  I was BURNING when I got there!  Oh and I wore my ShapeUps too so that was just added effort.  Actually they're not shape-ups they're a Dr. Scholls version of the same concept but the soles are so rounded that you can't stand in one place without having to constantly adjust your center of gravity in tiny ways to keep you from falling over.  I love them!  Anyway ... back to the marathon.

So I can't make the marathon for two reasons: 1) I probably won't finish in time and I need to skip this one and aim for the next one so I have some time to train.  2) It costs $160 to run.  I know it's for a good cause but I can't possibly raise that kind of money in three days.  BUT ... I'm still going to start working on doing a mile three nights a week, then when I get to where I can do a mile in 18 minutes or less I'll start doing 2 miles.  Then I'll start doing it every day.  On Saturdays and Sunday's I'll start walking and see how many times I can do it before I fall over.  The next marathon in vegas though ... I want in on it.  I want those pictures of me crossing the finish line with sweat rolling off my head and a big stupid smile on my face.  You all want to see that right?  Yeah me too.

So, on that note, it was suggested that I eat banana's after working out to increase potassium and decrease lactic acid in my muscles.  Sure, why not.  So Tuesday I did the same number of squat and lunge reps that I did last week and did some push-ups too.  Then I ate a banana, then did last night's walk.  When I hit the end of the mile all I could think was "oh I am so going to feel this in the morning".  I was shocked when I woke up, my fit hit the floor and I actually felt a little bit of spring in my step.  Woohooey.

Edit: (2:14 pm) I felt a little bit of scratchiness in the back of my throat when I woke up this morning, thought nothing of it.  By noon I felt dreadful (thanks mom for getting me sick!) and now I just want to crawl in a hole and die.  I drank some hot broth with lemon and cayenne pepper because that usually makes my throat feel better but the motivation to exercise is near impossible.  I got up and did 30 deep squats and got dizzy, clammy, and my head is throbbing.  Is eating 300 calories less than usual the same thing as burning 300 calories?  I could probably go to sleep when work is over and be out cold until tomorrow morning with the way I'm feeling right now.  I don't even get hungry when I'm sleeping so that's a win/win right?

Food:
32 oz water (plain)
16 oz water (with chicken broth, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper)
8 oz water (with alkaseltzer)
8 oz coffee with creamer
8 oz orange juice
1 red pear
1 banana
15 Sun Chips
1 whole cucumber peeled, sliced (in rice wine vinegar w/salt and pepper)
2 slices white american cheese
1 wheat everything bagel (w/1 tbsp of salsa)
1 cup cheese potatoes
2 cups dry popcorn (100 cals, needed salty w/all the liquid I've had today)

Exercise:
30 squats

  1. Yeah, it's good to build up a good walk foundation before starting to run. Just don't jump into things too fast so you don't get an injury. You should start the Couch to 5K Running Program. :-)

  2. Honestly I think running is at least 50-75 lbs away. With my legs, knees, and ankles I would be happy just to walk a marathon start to finish and that, if the time limit was long enough, I think I can do. Once I get going I can force myself to keep moving but running is something I haven't done in years, literally...not even little mini-sprints from my car to the door when it's pouring outside. *sigh*

  3. that's just awesome that you've set this goal for the marathon. Not a 5k, not a 10k but you're just going for it and you've given yourself a schedule. My joggin has not proceeded like I wanted but just as soon as I'm better, I'm going to make a schedule and stick with it. Sometimes concentrating on the running takes the focus off the food. Looks as you're doing really good with your calorie intake. That's the hardest part for me.

  4. Yeah, that sounds like the smart thing to do so that you don't get injured. With persistence, you'll get there eventually, though. One of my weight loss inspirations started off over a hundred pounds overweight, and now he's a marathon runner and an Ironman. He did all of that over the course of two years. So yeah, that'll be us one day (hopefully!). If you're interested, his blog is bendoeslife.tumblr.com.
